Anne & Kirk Douglas Playground Award (225)
Anne Douglas decided to help improve playgrounds in LAUSD after reading an article in the Los Angeles Times (1997) about the lack of equipment and potentially hazardous conditions faced by children on Los Angeles’ playgrounds and campuses. She discussed her interest with her husband, legendary actor Kirk Douglas, and, together, they enlisted the help of Anita May Rosenstein, a lifelong friend and fellow philanthropist, and Richard Riordan, former Los Angeles Mayor and head of the Riordan Foundation to create the Anne and Kirk Douglas Playground Award. In addition to financial support from the founding members, the Annenberg Foundation committed to four years of support in 1998.
