Hi neighbors and friends--good news to start off the weekend:
1. According to Jose's brother-in-law Robert, Jose is improving and now
only using the ventilator as back up during the day. It is hoped that
he will be able to come off the sedation in the next few days, and
perhaps going home soon. This is excellent news. Maria and Luna are
also recovering well and have been incredibly moved by the outpouring of
support both locally and across the country.
2. Updates have been made to the http://www.FriendsOfLuna.com page--you
can donate there online via PayPal, and please link to the page on your
blogs and newsletters. It looks like we'll be having a live auction
instead of a silent auction on Saturday March 27th, along with lots of
other fun activities. More news as plans develop, and suggestions are
welcome. Questions about the FriendsofLuna.com website should be
directed to Sarah Didvar-Saadi at didvarsaadi@yahoo.com.
3. If you're a social networker, please join our Friends of Luna
Facebook pages! Go to Facebook and search for "Friends of Luna" and
you'll pull up
both a group page and a Fan page, please join both for updates on the
family's condition and the fundraiser events. You can easily share
information with your friends about FriendsofLuna and our fundraiser
through your Facebook updates, and we encourage everyone to help spread
the word. Invite your online friends to join Friends of Luna and feel
free to comment, too!
You can also find the Friends of Luna Facebook page by going to
http://www.tinyurl.com/friendsoflunafacebook.
4. The Meier Street Neighbors are seeking donations from local
businesses, service providers, and artisans for auction items, raffle
prizes, and other fundraising purposes. Help us hustle up from your
favorite local places--restaurants, salons, cafes, hard goods, sports
shots, gaming, computer gear--anything you can think of! We'll find a
way to use it to make more money for the family. We are particularly
looking for a food truck or two that would park nearby and donate part
of their proceeds on the fundraiser day, entertainment, and advance
signage donations.
Donations for the auction and garage sale should be made through
Jennifer Hemsley @ jennifer_hemsley@yahoo.com, and please have anyone
who wants to donate food or entertainment services contact me at
marryme@marriagetogo.com.
5. The PayPal account and trust fund donations are growing! We hope to
have an update for you soon, and the money is desperately needed as the
family now seeks to find housing, buy clothing, and reestablish some
sort of stability in their lives. Our thanks to you and your extended
networks for your generosity.
That's it for now--have a great weekend, and hope to have more
encouraging news soon. Take care.
Kind Regards,
Elizabeth Oakes

Friends and neighbors:
I welcome several new community members to this email list, and I thank
them for volunteering to join the effort. Here is the latest news about
the family's condition and the upcoming Meier Street fundraiser:
1. Maria and Luna were released from the hospital Sunday and are
recovering well. Luna is staying with friends close to her school and
Maria is staying with her sister-in-law in the Lancaster area for the
time being, as it is closer to the burn center and she still needs
assistance throughout the day. It is hoped that Luna will be able to
start back to school next week, and Maria is considering living spaces
on Meier Street so she can be close to her neighbors and friends. We
are grateful to all those who have offered housing and it is hoped the
family will be reunited soon.
Unfortunately Jose's fragile condition is mostly unchanged; he remains
heavily sedated at the burn center where he underwent some skin and lung
treatments yesterday. Our thoughts are with him as he struggles to recover.
2. Both the family's cats have now been located and are being tenderly
cared for. They are still understandably skittish but are being fed and
monitored.
3. THE FRIENDS OF LUNA WEBSITE http://www.friendsofluna.com is now
up and operational! It contains updates on the family's story as well
as a PayPal donation link for those who'd like to contribute funds
online and information on donating to the family's trust fund by check
(see below.)
4. ONLINE DONATIONS: If you would like to donate directly from your
PayPal account, debit/credit card, or direct bank withdrawal, you can
either hit the button at the bottom of the http://www.friendsofluna.com
page, or--if you don't already have a PayPal account--you can go
PayPal.com and "Sign Up" for an account. Once you've created an
account, hit the "Send Money" link and enter donate@friendsofluna.com as
the destination email address for your contribution. That money will be
deposited into the trust account set up for the family. Thanks to Sarah
for getting the website and online donation links happening, and so fast!
5. DONATIONS BY CHECK: For those who would prefer to write a check to
the trust account, make them payable to "The Estigarrivia Albertini
Family Trust" and mail directly to John P Ziaukas, Attorney at Law,
12011 San Vicente Boulevard, Suite 530, Los Angeles, California 90049
for deposit. Jose, Maria and Luna are the sole beneficiaries of this
account and we are grateful to John and Loren for arranging it.
6. DONATIONS FOR MEIER STREET FUNDRAISER, 3/27: We are seeking 1)
DONATIONS OF NEW ITEMS, GIFT CARDS, AND GIFT CERTIFICATES to be sold at
the live auction or given as game prizes, and 2) DONATED GOODS TO SELL
at the multi-family garage sale. Please contact Jennifer Hemsley
if you have new items you'd like to donate.
Though logistics of sale donations have yet to be finalized, to
minimize the need for storage space before the sale we are asking those
who donate to bring the stuff to Meier Street the morning of the sale,
unless there are large or valuable items that need special handling.
Please contact Jennifer if you have questions and to RSVP--we need to
have an idea how much stuff will be coming at us so we can figure out
the easiest game plan for everyone.
7. WE WILL SOON HAVE A FACEBOOK PAGE and hope you will "Friend" us!
Please assist the donation and publicity effort by spreading the word
through your social networks. We'll send that info when the page is live.
8. MARCH 27TH DATE FOR MEIER STREET FUNDRAISER CONFIRMED. Plans are
afoot for a live auction at 1 p.m., a Meier Street Kids Bake Sale,
face-painting and henna artistry, games, music, and more! Please
contact me, Elizabeth Oakes, if you'd like to
donate services to the fundraiser; we would be especially grateful for
musicians, street entertainers, photographers, and others who are
interested in donating their time or services to help raise funds. WE
ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR A FOOD TRUCK TO PARK AT THE END OF THE STREET AND
DONATE A PORTION OF THEIR TAKE TO THE FAMILY. Other ideas are welcome,
please drop me a line.
9. Finally, thanks to our local Mar Vista quilters who have offered to
donate quilts for the family. These quilts are made by volunteers and
are given to those who need comfort in a time of need, and they are a
beautiful and meaningful gift. I have not been given the quilters'
names, but they know who they are. :) We are grateful for the work of
their hands and their hearts.
Please feel free to forward this email and/or repost information to your
websites, blogs, or Facebook/Twitter accounts. We need all the help and
donations we can find, so please spread the word!
If anyone you know would like to be added to this update email list,
please have them email me at marryme@marriagetogo.com. THANKS, more
news as plans develop.
Kind Regards,
Elizabeth Oakes

THE BEETHOVEN BUZZ FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 1, 2010
BREAKING NEWS...The safety of all students is a priority at Beethoven. Recently, there have been several instances that put our children in jeopardy so we need all parents to set an example, exercise good judgment and use common sense. Do not double park on any street surrounding Beethoven. That is dangerous. If you are asked to move your vehicle, please do so immediately. Do not allow your child to exit the car into the street; rearrange a car seat if need be to allow students to exit onto the curb. Do not park in the bus zone; young preschool children exit the bus. Do not cross the street with your child anywhere except at an intersection. Do not use your cell phone or text while driving. Place a helmet on your child if he/she is riding a bike or if you are with a child on your bike. You may be careful; other drivers may not. Do not park in the valet zone even if it is for a minute. All parents are trying to get their children safely to school in the morning so your help
is appreciated. Sadly, tempers can flare so keep profanity to yourself!! Children follow the lead of parents so we expect all adults to set good examples. Do not put Beethoven children in harm's way!
NEXT PTA/FOB MEETING Mark your calendar for the next parent group meeting on TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 6:30PM in the Library. Child care and snacks provided.
WESTSIDE PAVILION KID'S CLUB Kid's Club is kicking off this week beginning WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3 with PUPPETS on PARADE. Puppeteer Scott is the most highly sought after puppeteer in Southern California! His puppets have appeared in films and on television and his puppets come to life! Join him on Level 3, in the Food Court, 6:00PM-6:45PM. Sign in and our school will get attendance points/credit!
BEETHOVEN'S E-WASTE DRIVE Save your used electronics for Beethoven’s E-Waste Drive on APRIL 24th from 9:00AM-3:00PM. Bring your old TVs, monitors, computers, clocks, wires, cables and anything electronic so that it can be recycled safely and easily for you. Tell your friends and neighbors too. Celebrate Earth Day by cleaning out that old stuff piled up in the garage!
CLOTHES FOR THE NURSE If you have gently used shorts or shirts, boy or girl, please drop your donation labeled "Nurse" to the office. Also, we are collecting new under garments and socks. These items will be put to good use for those students who have accidents and parents aren't readily available to bring a change of clothes.
BEETHOVEN NIGHT OUT Details for the next Beethoven Night Out fundraiser will be forthcoming. We're hoping to have it at the new pizzeria in town!
CANS FOR A CURE Beethoven will be organizing a team for the May 2010 Revlon Run/Walk for Women's Cancers. Please donate your recyclable cans and bottles to the bin in front of Room 28 and proceeds help raise funds for the cause and to sponsor the Beethoven team. We count on these proceeds so parents, please do not empty the containers for personal recycling.
ART SUPPLIES NEEDED Supplies and donations are requested for the PS Arts Program. This week, we are collecting not only rolls of double weight aluminum foil, 25 x 12 inches, and construction paper (assorted colors) and boxes of crayons. If you can donate these items, please label, "PS Arts" and drop off in the school office. Thank you!
INTERESTED IN LEARNING MANDARIN? As part of our afterschool enrichment offerings, we are considering teaching a Mandarin Chinese class but wanted to get a sense of interest. Classes are geared toward elementary school age children and would be taught at Beethoven. If you have interest, please send an email to Jana Montgomery at janamarie@claudiosantini.com If you have other course ideas or are interested in teaching a class, let Jana know that, too!
LOST AND FOUND If your child went to school with a jacket or sweatshirt and came home without one, please check the lost and found. Please label your child's belongings so items can be returned promptly if identified. All leftover items will be donated to charity the week of spring break.
COFFEE CARDS! Now, you can get your weekly coffee fix at the assembly without carrying money! Just purchase a coffee card for $5 on sale at the coffee cart near Room 26.
MARCH VALET Attention all 5th grade families, March is the last month that you will need to do valet service! Parents, choose two valet days or show up at 7:30AM by the auditorium as we ALWAYS need help.
SILENT AUCTION DONATIONS If you have a business or have friends or relatives who have a business or service and would like to donate to Beethoven's Silent Auction in May, please let Beethoven's Donation Coordinator, Kathy Vigil, katkitti@aol.com know. She will provide the appropriate paperwork and tax-exempt ID information.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Take a look in your cupboards and collect Box Tops; each class is collecting them. Please place box tops in an envelope labelled 'Box Tops' and your child's name and classroom. They can be returned to your teacher or placed in the FOB mailbox. I will collect them on a weekly basis. The class with the most box tops wins a to-be-determined prize!
NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
AID TO LOCAL FAMILY Last week, there was a fire on nearby Meier Street and neighbors are tentatively planning a benefit garage sale/fundraiser on SATURDAY, MARCH 27 to help the family who lost everything. They are rounding up as many local resources as they can as well as soliciting donations to advertise the fundraiser. All three family members were injured. If you can help, please contact John Ayers @ jdayers@mac.com Once the fundraiser is confirmed, the neighbors will advertise and we are hoping Beethoven families can do what they can to help as well. I will post as I hear the news.
ART EXHIBIT The Wonder of Learning, 100 languages of children exhibit continues through April at 1129 Second Street in Santa Monica. Check out this fantastic exhibit: http://www.reggioexhibitla.com/ for details, hours, etc.
RELAY FOR LIFE, JOIN OUR TEAM! Join Team Beethoven Bears at the 2nd Annual Battle of the Schools for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Culver City. The event is from 9:00AM on MAY 15 to 9:00AM on MAY 16 at Culver City High School. You can register at relayforlife.org/culvercityca and join the Beethoven Bears. For more information, contact Gloria Halfacre at gloria@sipi.usc.edu or 310.739.7107. Help the fight against cancer.
SWEETS FROM OUR SWEETS It's Girl Scout Cookie time. Boxes are still only $4 a box. There are Girl Scouts in every classroom, so order yours today. How about donating some Girl Scout Cookies to the LA Food Bank or Military Troops in the US and overseas? This is our Gift of Caring program. See Gloria for details.
MORE ITEMS FOR RECYLCING Don't forget we are still collecting used toner and cell phones for recycling. No remanufactured toner please. Items can be dropped off at the school office. See the qualifying list at http://www.fundingfactory.com/admin/participant/qualifying_items.aspx.
TIP OF THE WEEK If your jewelry is looking a little dull, polish with a bit of toothpaste (not gel) or immerse in a glass of Coca Cola. Both solutions have brought dull pieces back to life without the investment of expensive abrasive clearers.
YOU'VE BEEN STUNG Nadia Yoshioka, you've been stung! Nadia makes it a point to keep the 5th grade parents in check by sending out helpful reminders. She is often on campus helping and organizing events. She can be found selling food, assisting with the morning valet and volunteering at fundraisers. We have counted on Nadia over the years and she has never failed to give us her extra effort. Nadia, we appreciate you and thank you for all that you do for Beethoven!
Have a great week!
