Friends of BeethovenTHE BEETHOVEN BUZZ FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 12, 2010

BREAKING NEWS... Beethoven Night Out is all day and evening TONIGHT at the Panda Express, 4325 Glencoe Ave, Marina del Rey. Look for the flyer in your child’s folder and try to attend! 20% of sales go back to our school!

FRIDAY AFTERNOON TREAT SALES This Friday at the auditorium gate, the 5th grade parents will be selling treats for $1.00-$2.00 so consider stopping by and supporting the 5th grade. Funds raised go towards culmination activities. We appreciate your support!

SHINY CARS WILL BE HERE! The Car Show is coming to Beethoven this SATURDAY, APRIL 17. Lots of music, beautiful cruisers, hot rods and vintage cars, performers and special guests will be on hand throughout the day! We need volunteers for the entire day, from setup to cleanup 8:30AM-4:30PM. Contact Ashley Halverson @ firepie22@aol.com if you can help. We need each family to donate an hour of time. If you are unable to make it, please bring a case of water/juice boxes to support this fundraiser. Drop donations off at the school office, and label "Car Show."

CUB SCOUT PACK MEETING ON SUNDAY, APRIL 18TH! The scouts will be going on a hike. Meet at the Beethoven teachers’ parking lot on SUNDAY, APRIL 18 at 9:30AM and the group will caravan to Malibu Creek State Park. Please let Cub master Brian Lund, leftypots@yahoo.com, know if you will attend so that no one is left behind. Remember to be prepared with water, snacks, hiking boots, hat, sunscreen, and a sack lunch. Parking is $12, but there may be parking slots open on the main street and you'll need to walk a short distance.

PLANNING MEETINGS The next Silent Auction and Bingo Fiesta planning meeting is set for MONDAY, APRIL 19 after morning drop off in Room 18. Please volunteer your time to help make this a fun evening and to help raise much needed funds to keep Beethoven such a fantastic school.

BOOK FAIR The Scholastic Book Fair Diner--All You Can read will be open next week in the Library. We need help this Thursday and Friday to decorate the Library. We are asking if anyone has 1950's-themed items or diner items that they can lend as decorations to please let Michelle Gardner know (art4mny@ca.rr.com) The Book Fair will be open during Open House and we could use volunteers to staff during that time as well as at recess, lunch and an hour after school. Tear down and packing help is also needed next Friday. The proceeds from the sales of books will go toward the purchase of Scholastic Weekly Readers for the classrooms next year. The Booster Club hope you will buy book(s) and encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes a day!

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION The New Parent Orientation is TUESDAY, APRIL 20 at 9:00AM in the auditorium. It is a great opportunity to meet Beethoven’s wonderful kindergarten teachers, principal Dr. Althea Ford, members of the Friends of Beethoven booster club as well as parents and students of what is recognized as one of the best schools in Los Angeles – Beethoven Street Elementary School – A California Distinguished School, a Title I High Academic Achievement School, and a California Business For Excellence Honor Roll School. Spread the word to friends and neighbors who are contemplating a school choice for next year and see what makes Beethoven stand out. Hear a short presentation of the programs offered, take a tour of the amazing campus and step inside the kindergarten classes to see for yourself what children are learning.

OPEN HOUSE Open House is TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 4:30-7:30PM. This is a chance to visit your child’s classroom and talk with the teachers. It is a great opportunity to come a bit early and purchase food from the 5th graders as they raise funds for culmination activities. Sloppy Joes, nachos, desserts, drinks and other items will be for sale throughout the evening. All classrooms are open so stop in to see your child's class you are welcome to visit next year's classroms.

5th GRADE PARENT DONATIONS We are collecting donations of food to sell at the Open House. Each 5th grade family is asked to donate bottled waters, individual juice/drinks, bags of chips, desserts (cookies/cupcakes), nacho cheese, jalapenos, tortilla chips, paper plates, plastic ware, napkins, or make a $5.00 donation in an envelope addressed to your child’s teacher. Bring items directly to your classroom. The sales of food at Open House offsets culmination costs. We still need to raise quite a bit of money so we need your help. Also, we need parents to help sell items beginning at 4:00PM on Tuesday. Respond to his email if you are available.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (YDP) PARENT LIASION We are pleased to announce that we now have a YDP parent liaison, Jo Jeffs, who is the point of contact with any concerns, issues, and praise you have for YDP staff. SILENT AUCTION COMING TO TOWN Mark your calendars for SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2010, 6:00PM-10:00PM, for the Silent Auction/Raffle/Bingo/Food/Drinks/Music evening for adults at the Santa Monica Women's Club. We are soliciting donations from businesses and Beethoven families and you will receive a letter in your child's folder that has the details. Donations are tax deductible.

SILENT AUCTION BASKETS NEEDED! The 5th grade parents are coordinating the baskets for this year's Silent Auction. Each grade will be making a themed basket and we are asking each grade's room parents to coordinate donations for that grade's basket. You can place a box in the classroom for collections and we would like all donations collected by FRIDAY, APRIL 23. Listed below are the basket themes for each grade and we leave it up to each grade to assembly and wrap the basket and suggest a price. In previous years, these baskets were good bidding items and we expect no less this year! So, please consider the theme when you give a donation. Some baskets include gift cards so if you are unable to donate an item, a cash donation or gift card is also nice.

    Kinder: beach
    1st: road trip
    2nd: education
    3rd: bath
    4th: kitchen
    5th: entertainment

If a grade is unable to assemble their basket, no problem, just let me know and the 5th grade parents will package the baskets for the auction.

Nominations for leadership position next year:  2 year terms

    Membership VP and  Secretary

Thank  you to the teachers in attendance.

Update by Principal:  Budget cuts are affecting Beethoven.

The SLRP Program has been closed for next school year.  We are trying to get another pre-school program in place: either State or Head start five days a week.  Special day class has been cut.  It is taught by Tracey Albert.  The School Psychologist has been reduced to a day a week.   By April 1 or by the end of the school year, we are asked to raise $7K for an additional day a week to assess as many children as possible.  Special needs children will be placed back into the regular classrooms affecting all classes.

Pink clips will be distributed on March 15 and we may lose 1-2 teachers.  We will need to reprioritize to buy another teacher. As other staff positions are getting cut as well.  The class sizes for next year are to be:

    3 K classes
    3 1st grade classes
    2 2nd grade classes
    2 3rd grade classes
    2 fourth grade classes
    2 5th grade classes

Discussion included how to prioritize and costs:

PS Arts is on contract so we do not need to fundraise for that program.

    A TA costs $13.5K

CEAC/ELAC funds are specifically designated.    The school cannot ask for supplies but children can come to school with supplies.  See if CEAC/ELAC funds can supplement if there is funding.

    Obligations

    • $7500 psychomotor for one day a week
    • Measuring Up books $8K, reduced to $3K if we recycle them
    • Scholastic News $2K but now Book Fair points will cover those subscriptions
    • $2400 for six buses for field trips for kinder and first grade and a bus for the end of the year
    • $330-400/month for homework lab

    FOB

    Expense report will be posted

Technology meeting report:  Corby did a needs assessment.  Ideally, we would like computers in all the classrooms for teachers and students.  Laptops for teachers as a priority; encourage all to apply for grants or seek out new grant opportunities.  April 8 is the next Technology meeting.  Computer donations will initially go to the Kinder and first grade teachers. Replacing old systems.

Beethoven Night Out will be at Islands in March 16.)  A new BNO chairperson will be needed for next year.

Fitness Challenge has moved from April 9 and new date is TBD.  Goal is $7500 and children get sponsored.  Donations of waters and oranges will be needed.  Will include in the Buzz when we have a set date.

Car Show is April 17.  Flyers will be distributed.  All car-related products or booths are open to the public to sell items.  There is a 100 car goal this year plus motorcycles.

Silent Auction, Bingo, Fiesta is May 1 at the Santa Monica Women’s Club from 6-10PM.  We are collecting Silent Auction baskets from each class and donations. Free entry.  Flyers will be distributed and the event will be open to the public.  5th grade parents will be collecting the baskets and teacher’s donations.

Kinder RoundUp and New Parent Orientation is April 20.  There is a signup sheet and we are looking for parents from the upper grades to share their  experiences and knowledge about the school.

Relay for Life – Team, Beethoven Bears, May 16 at Culver High.  This is  a 24 hour fundraiser and parents and students are walking during the 24 hour relay.  All are encouraged to participate.  Buy luminaria bags!

The next meeting is TUESDAY, April 13 at 6:30PM in the Library .
