Friends of BeethovenBREAKING NEWS... THE SILENT AUCTION IS THIS SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2010, 6:00PM-10:00PM. STUDENT PUBLISHED BOOKS We are still collecting class stories for the published books spearheaded by Annick. Please remind your child to bring his/her designated story back to school. Room parents should be collecting stories and typing them so each grade will have their book published. If you have questions, please contact: Annick @annickfr@yahoo.com Classes that do not submit materials will not have a published book.

PETITION SIGNATURES NEEDED LAUSD has eliminated the special needs day class for next year. Many parents have already signed the petition to keep the day class so that students with special needs get the individualized attentions they need to succeed in school. Beethoven Street Elementary has been notified that our Special Day Class (SDC) is scheduled to close for the next school year, 2010-2011. Beethoven will be left with only a Resource Program to provide services for our students who are academically struggling and facing other issues impacting their education. LAUSD is making severe cuts to Special Education despite receiving almost $134,000,000 in Federal Stimulus money specifically for Special Ed. We need to stand together and communicate to the district that closing our Special Day Class is not acceptable. We need our SDC, as it is an integral part of our learning
community. Through a collaborative and co-teaching model Special and General education students have greatly benefited. As a distinguished learning community, we remain dedicated to providing an enriched and balanced educational program for all our students. In order to continue servicing all students, we need the SDC to remain open. Thank you.

REMINDERS There will be no school on FRIDAY, MAY 28 and MONDAY, MAY 31. Make plans for that long weekend!

CANS FOR A CURE Beethoven will be organizing a team for the May 2010 Revlon Run/Walk for Women's Cancers. Please donate your recyclable cans and bottles to the bin in front of Room 28 and proceeds help raise funds for the cause and to sponsor the Beethoven team. We count on these proceeds so parents; please do not empty the containers for personal recycling.

ART SUPPLIES NEEDED Art supply donations are requested for the APS Arts program. These next few weeks, we will be collecting glue sticks and 8.5”x11” construction paper. If you can donate these items, please label, "APS Arts" and drop off in the school office. Thank you!

TIP OF THE WEEK In the spirit of Earth Day reminders, remember to unplug those appliances. Even though that dvd player might be "off", its still using electricity, which costs you money and adds to the climate change problem by putting out more emissions. When you're not using an appliance, unplug them! Try using a powerstrip to keep all your appliances plugged in without using electricity.

YOU'VE BEEN STUNG Kathy Vigil gets stung as all of us know all her work in effort in not only coordinating the Silent Auction, but she has solicited donations from vendors, collected donations from school families, types up the auction catalog and coordinated classroom basket and teacher donations. We want to thank Kathy for handling all aspects of the Silent Auction, Bingo and dinner event on Saturday. Let’s give her a round of cheer but attending this great party! Thank you, Kathy, we appreciate all your work this year and are grateful for your efforts with the Silent Auction!

    Have a great weekend,

    Cheers, Elizabeth R. Palser
