BREAKING NEWS... CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 5th GRADE BEETHOVEN GRADUATES!
We are very proud of our graduating class this year and wish all a happy
and successful future and best of luck in the 6th grade! We will miss you all!
4th GRADE PARENTS Help is needed tomorrow morning, WEDNESDAY JUNE 17 from 7:30AM --10AM for the graduation ceremony. We are asking that any
parents who can help, please do so the 5th grade parents can enjoy the
ceremony! We especially need help between 9:30-10:00 to help serve cake
and punch. Please show up in the auditorium for the early morning and
in the cafeteria area during the ceremony. Thank you!
WE LOVE YOU, MRS. VIRGO The parents of children in Mrs. Virgo's class
are hosting a potluck lunch in her honor on THURSDAY JUNE 18 at noon,
in the cafeteria. Knowing there are many in the school who would like
the chance to say farewell, everyone is welcome. If you would like to
stay for lunch, please bring a food contribution. It would be helpful to
know how many are likely to attend and what they will bring, so please
contact Jo Jeffs via email - joannajeffs2005@gmail.com, if you decide to
come.
YARD SALE FOR BEETHOVEN FAMILY IN NEED We are planning another yard sale for SATURDAY, JUNE 20 from 8:00-12:00 on Palms Blvd between
Centinela and Beethoven. The address is 12625 Woodgreen Street but
enter in the back on Palms Blvd as that is where the sale will be held. We need
volunteers and more donations to make this happen. Drop offs can happen
that morning. We are looking to borrow clothes racks! Please reply to this email if you can help that day or have donations as we would sure appreciate it. Bring your lawn chairs and join us. We'll set up at 7:30AM and plan to be finished by
12:30. All proceeds will go to help a Beethoven family in need.
THE BUZZ CONTINUES If you would like to continue getting the Buzz, you
need not do a thing. If you would like to discontinue receiving updates,
please send me a quick email (reply to this message) and I'll take you
off the list. If you have others to add, please forward their email
addresses. As always, comments, feedback and suggestions for
improvement are welcomed and appreciated!

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that it is customary that each Beethoven Street Elementary School graduating class leaves the school a gift? Well, they do. This year, the 5th graders painted a map of the United States on the big yard. Check out the link of a video of the map painting on our webpage: www.friendsofbeethoven.org Thanks for the geography lesson 5th Grade class!
AN AUTHOR AMONG US! Need a great Father's Day present? Buy Beethoven dad, Doug Mallon's BASEBALL MANIACS book for $5.00! Doug donated books at the yard sale and you can pick up a copy for a gift and he will autograph it! The book follows Doug visits to thirty baseball stadiums over one summer. If you love baseball, this is a book for you. If you are not yet a fan, the book makes the reader a part of the game! Reply to this email if you would like to buy a copy and we'll hook you up.
YOU'VE BEEN STUNG Kristen Jimenez, you've been stung! Kristen, a
Kinder mom, was gracious to not only donate loads of great stuff to the yard sale but she also was our cashier last Saturday and she stayed and helped throughout the sale. She and hubby, Frank, carted all the goods away to be stored for the next sale--not a small feat! We appreciate all your help, Kristen and we thank you!
TIP OF THE WEEK Who couldn't use a vocabulary lesson? Check out the
Princeton Reviews vocab minute; great songs and various levels to learn
new words: http://www.princetonreview.com/vocab-minute.aspx Start on Friday and you'll have completed 81 vocabularly lessons by the time school resumes in September.
Have a wonderful summer. Stay safe, stay connected and wear your sunscreen!

Hello all-
There's more happening this week so check it out!
NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP PAINT
The 5th grade is looking for "Last Minute Volunteers with artistic flair." The 5th graders are painting their "gift to Beethoven" this THURSDAY JUNE 11 starting right after recess (10:30AM) and continuing until it is finished (hopefully by 2:30PM or 3:00PM)!
Parents are needed to help organize the 35ft x36ft stencil and guide the students, plus paint a little themselves, This will be a fun day of volunteering. Come by for just for an hour or for as long as you like!! All parents are welcome to assist (but it is just 5th graders who will be involved, since it is their class's present to Beethoven!) They really could use a few extra hands. Please email kellieann62@gmail.com or call Kellie Ann Murphy (Jackson Devine's mom) @310.780.2780 Thank you in advance from the Fifth Grade Students, Teachers & Room Parents
SEEING DOUBLE
This Friday, JUNE 12 is Twin Day. Students and their friends should dress alike. If you don't know what to wear, wear a Beethoven t-shirt. At recess there will be activities for twins to do together. Support your student council and get into the school spirit by dressing as twins! All grades are asked to participate!
SUMMER ART CLASS UPDATE
Jenny Swan has designed a specialized summer art program for Beethoven students.
In response to parents, the tuition has been reduced to $100 a week. Space is still available in most weeks. This imaginative program offers guest artists and athletes including muralists; and USC athletes have been added to the activity list! Detailed information can be found on the website: www.get2it.ezregister.com.
Enjoy your week!

Hello all-
Here are the minutes from the last PTA/FOB meeting held on May 5, 2009. (Just in time for tomorrow’s meeting...) Sorry about the wonky formatting; that’s what I get for editing it on mac and pc and using different accounts over a period of one long month! I need organization! Elizabeth

Protests Ms. Mills, 3rd grade teacher, Room 25 talked about the protest for proposed layoffs and increased class size. Beethoven is losing a teacher and a class. Grades K-3rd are in need of 24 more students. A protest will be before school along the street on May 15 and parents are asked to support the teachers. Children will not be affected. Plans are for students to be in the classrooms that day,
Silent Auction/Bingo Night We are looking for helpers to set up on Saturday to assist with the Silent Auction. Pre-bidding on auction items is available on the website. Donations for baskets will be collected for the classroom. Thanks to everyone who kindly contributed.

Respectfully submitted,
Elizabeth R. Palser

BREAKING NEWS… THE LAST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR IS SOON UPON US! It's Beethoven Day Out all Saturday at Panda in the marina. Bring the family and friends and stop in to eat as Panda will donate 30% of proceeds to our school! Flyers will be distributed later this week.
PINEWOOD DERBY All Beethoven cub scouts are reminded to bring their Pinewood Derby cars to the pack meeting TONIGHT, MONDAY, JUNE 8. Pre-race check is at 5:30PM. Races start at 6:00PM and all race car fans are welcomed. Let the races begin!
PTA/FOB MEETING Come to the last PTA/FOB meeting of the year. It will be on TUESDAY JUNE 9 at 6:00PM in the Library. Psst, really cool people go to these meetings so join us -- you'll fit right in.
CINDERELLA The YDP after school program students will perform in 'Cinderella' on THURSDAY JUNE 11 at 5:00PM in the auditorium. Come out to enjoy the show and congratulate our Beethoven actors! All are invited to this free play.
SUMMER SCHOOL IS CANCELLED The elementary/middle school transition program for summer was cancelled by LAUSD. School districts use the current budgets to pay for the summer school program with the expectation that the state will reimburse with next year's funds. But the state is not providing more economic assistance so the program has been cancelled. Due to budget cuts, there will not be summer school programs this year. Consider visiting the local public Library as one’s own private summer enrichment program!
501C3 STATUS If anyone needs proof of Beethoven's 501C3 status please email Trish Halfacre, t.halfacre@verizon.net This is very helpful for those employed by organizations or businesses that make or match donations!
WE NEED LEADERS! Beethoven's Girl Scout Troop is looking for more adults to become leaders. We have so many girls that would like to join our troop, but without more leaders, we can't take on many more. Please contact Gloria Halfacre, gloria@sipi.usc.edu or 310-739-7107 of your interest.
YARD SALE FOR BEETHOVEN FAMILY IN NEED We are planning a yard sale for next SUNDAY JUNE 14 from 8:00-12:00 in front of Beethoven School. Please email Elizabeth Palser, ashwood911@yahoo.com if you can help that morning. We will be finished by 12:30 and we need volunteers to make this happen.
THE BUZZ AND YOU I hope you have enjoyed reading the Beethoven Buzz this year and will continue to do so. I realize many families have graduates so if you would like your name removed from the Buzz for the next 2009-1010 school year, just let me know by responding to this email. Also, if you have friends, or relatives who would like to be added to the distribution list, please let me know that, too, and they'll get included. Comments, feedback and suggestions for improvement are always welcomed and appreciated!
DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that not only is Beethoven Elementary full of great students but it is full of generations of Beethoven alumnus? Many Beethoven students have parents, grandparents, cousins, and other family members who have been educated through our fine school. We even have a teacher or two who have sat in those tiny little desks as students!
YOU'VE BEEN STUNG Bob Halfacre, you've been stung. Bob can always be counted upon to help out, give time, cart, lug and carry things for events around campus. As part of the Halfacre brigade, he carries the volunteer gene. Bob, we know you help out in your own quiet way. We appreciate you and thank you!
TIP OF THE WEEK Now is the time to get those feet ready for summer-- pamper yourself with an Epson-salt and scented oil foot soak for 10 minutes. (Read a magazine while you wait!) Make a homemade mixture of olive oil and kosher salt or raw sugar and rub on feet or legs in an upward motion for two to three minutes, then rinse, moisturize and polish!
Have a wonderful week! Elizabeth R. Palser
