AFTERSCHOOL CLASSES A new slate of after school enrichment classes is underway and details will be forthcoming and in your child's folders. There are some exciting classes geared towards the kinder students, too!
JANUARY IS VALET MONTH FOR 2ND GRADE PARENTS All 2nd grade families are asked to staff the morning valet in January. Your help allows students to get onto campus safely. You can even drop by the auditorium (7:30-8:10AM) as help is always needed. Parents, DO NOT PARK IN THE VALET AREA (even for a moment) as your car will be ticketed! Parking patrol has been active in the area. Please note that there are telephone poles blocking the valet area. Until they are moved, please be careful with children exiting the car or drop your child off further down the street (but remember not to block the intersection or the teacher's parking lot entrance.)
5th GRADE CANDY GRAMS The 5th grade will be selling Valentine's Day themed Candy Grams and delivery will be on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12. Consider buying Candy Grams for your children, their friends and teachers. All proceeds help with the 5th grade culmination and trip. Closer to the date you can expect that order forms will be distributed in the folders.
RELAY FOR LIFE, JOIN OUR TEAM! Join Team Beethoven Bears at the 2nd Annual Battle of the Schools for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Culver City (including the communities of Marina del Rey, Mar Vista, Palms & Venice). The event is from 9:00AM on May 15 to 9:00AM on May 16th at Culver City High School. This is a family event and all are welcome. Come walk for our team for as little as a half hour. You can register at relayforlife.org/culvercityca and join the Beethoven Bears. For more information, contact Gloria Halfacre at gloria@sipi.usc.edu or 310.739.7107. Help the fight against cancer.
SWEETS FROM OUR SWEETS It's Girl Scout Cookie time! That's right; JANUARY 23rd begins Girl Scout Cookie sales. We have a new cookie this year, "Thank You Berry Munch". It is a sugar cookie with Ocean Spray Cranberries, white chocolate chips and rice krispies. It is yummy. Boxes are still only $4 a box. There are Girl Scouts in every classroom, so order yours today. If you do not know any scouts, you can also place your orders with Gloria Halfacre (gloria@sipi.usc.edu or 310.739.7107) and the girls will still get credit.
NO SUGAR FOR YOU? Don't eat cookies? No problem! How about donating some Girl Scout Cookies to the LA Food Bank or Military Troops in the US and overseas? This is our Gift of Caring program. See Gloria for details.
MORE ITEMS FOR RECYLCING Don't forget we are still collecting used toner and cell phones for recycling. No remanufactured toner please. Items can be dropped off at the school office. See the qualifying list at http://www.fundingfactory.com/admin/participant/qualifying_items.aspx.
RECYCLING Drop off your aluminum cans and plastic bottles (#1 and #2) in the big bin in front of Room 28. We do not have drop off containers in the main buildings because of ants. If there are classroom collection containers, those are encouraged to be dumped into the bins by Room 28. The school needs the proceeds so parents, please do not empty the containers for personal recycling as families are donating to support the school.
GET STAMPED! WESTSIDE PAVILION purchases are redeemed for points for our school. Shop now and log your receipts in January for double points. Points are redeemed for gift cards and we use them for attendance awards!
IDEAS? If you have ideas for fundraising or school improvements or just want to share your opinion, please direct your queries to the FOB Presidents, Andrea and Mark Andrews. They are most familiar with school protocol. Also, feel free to leave a note for them in the FOB mailbox.
CUB SCOUTS The Webelos Den meeting has been moved to SATURDAY, JANUARY 30 and a hike is planned. There will NOT be a meeting on SATURDAY, JANUARY 16.
SAVE THE ARTS Many parents asked that I circulate this petition. Please consider supporting the cause as there is discussion to eliminate arts education in LAUSD schools. View the link for details: http://www.petitiononline.com/la4arts/petition.html
SPECIAL THANKS The holiday giving program is one of the reasons that we are so fortunate to be part of the Beethoven family! Thank you to all who donated food and toys to our needy families. Special thanks to Kathy Vigil for coordinating, to Linda Mechanic and Peach Tree Pottery and their friends for all their toy donations and to Mar Vista neighbor Allison Elder for her overwhelming contribution of food and toys! And not to forget our cub scouts--this effort could not have been done without the help of the scouts. Thank you to all as you made the holidays much happier for many families!
NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS There will be a free electronic waste drop off at Walgrove Elementary School (1630 Walgrove Ave.) on SATURDAY, JANUARY 30, 9:00AM-3:00PM. Drop off electronics to be recycled and funds will go to the Walgrove's booster club.
TIP OF THE WEEK Want a little fresh air inside? While you're cooking a meal or just after, set a small pot of water on the stove and drop in a slice of lemon, a cinnamon stick, or a couple pinches of your favorite aromatic spice. Let the pot boil for several minutes, and the smell will permeate your kitchen/home with its fragrance.
YOU'VE BEEN STUNG Jennifer Manheim, you've been stung! Whenever there is a need for donations (waters or juice or cupcakes) or classroom deliveries, Jennifer comes to the rescue. She's provided refreshments for many occasions over the years. She has also been a good resource for information for party venues, printing services, etc. Thanks, Jennifer, for all you do to help our school. We appreciate you and thank you!
Have a great week!
Cheers, Elizabeth R. Palser
